The Explorer Section is for young people aged 14 to 18 years old and they make up the fourth section of the Scouting family after Beavers, Cubs and Scouts.

Explorers are encouraged to lead themselves in deciding the programme and direction of the Unit, with support and guidance from leaders. The section also includes the Young Leaders’ Scheme, where young people are able to take on a leadership role in one of the younger sections.

Explorers are usually invested into the Unit after four to six weeks. When they are invested, they make their Promise and say the Law and can then proudly wear the scarlet necker of their partner-Group, 52nd Reading. They are also awarded the World Membership Badge, The Royal County of Berkshire, Reading Central District and Rockhoppers Explorer Unit badges.
